Impressive Showing by Banyana Banyana in Senegal Friendly

Amogelang Motau, a stalwart in South African women’s football, has advanced from junior levels, including captaining the U17 Women’s National Team at the 2018 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, to playing for Banyana Banyana and leading the University of the Western Cape.

After a challenging 1-1 draw with Senegal in the first of two international friendlies, Motau shared her thoughts “We played well, but there’s always room for improvement,” she said.

“The first half was very physical, which we expected from Senegal, but we needed to play more to our strengths.

It was tough playing with new teammates, but with time, we’ll get better.”

Motau pointed out the team’s improved performance in the second half, following Coach Desiree’s instructions.

She stressed the importance of these friendlies in rebuilding the team ahead of WAFCON and aiming for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“Coach Desiree has made it clear that we need to earn ourplaces on the team, and everyone is working hard towards that.”

Motau is confident that the team will improve in the second match by leveraging their insights into Senegal’s weaknesses.

Banyana Banyana will face the Teranga Lionesses again on Tuesday, 4 June 2024, at Stade Lat Dior in Thies, Senegal, at 5pm local time.
