Gonçalves Hails Angola’s Consistency in Cosafa Cup Triumph

Seeds of Success: Goncalves Harvests Rewards of Youth DevelopmentThe seeds sown in 2018 have finally blossomed for Angola, as coach Pedro Goncalves reaps the rewards of his focus on youth development.

Fresh off an impressive run at the AFCON, Goncalves orchestrated a dominant display at the COSAFA Cup in South Africa, culminating in a historic 5-0 victory over Namibia in the final.

This triumph marks Angola’s fourth COSAFA Cup title, but more importantly, it signifies the success of Goncalves’ long-term vision. “This journey began with the U17 team back in 2018,” explained Goncalves. “It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of those players, some of whom are now key figures in the senior squad, while others are thriving in their professional careers.”

Goncalves’ arrival in 2018 marked a turning point for Angolan youth development. He quickly established his credentials by leading the U17 team to a COSAFA Cup U17 gold medal, a podium finish at the CAF U17 AFCON, and a historic first appearance at the FIFA U17 World Cup.

While the final score suggests a one-sided affair, Goncalves remained gracious in victory. “Namibia has a strong team,” he acknowledged. “They played exceptionally well to reach the final. Credit to coach Collin Benjamin for the progress they’re making with the Namibian national team.

It’s exciting to see positive development across Southern African football.
